ABOUT THIS PROJECT

I became interested in data visualization while interning at an investment banking firm where I spent a lot of time working on client presentations. Most investment banking pitchbooks are inherently similar to each other. To create more visually compelling presentations, I decided to try to imitate work created by the data design teams at the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, the Economist, Pew Research Center, FiveThirtyEight.

It became clear that to recreate their work, I needed another tool besides the Excel. I learned about R, and grudgingly, decided to attempt to learn it. I hesitated because as a non-technical person writing code did not seem natural to me. But the temptation to learn do something at the WSJ or NYT design level took over, and I took the first step.

Eventually, the code started making more sense, and the next step was to learn more about the typography and more intricate data design techniques. My goal is to learn R, Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Adobe Illustrator to research data and create visually appealing, interactive and meaningful visualizations.

I also want to show that we, non-technical people, can also learn and apply some coding to creating work that will stand out at all levels.
